Energy Efficient Windows

What Makes a Window Energy Efficient

In Phoenix the job is simple to say: keep the sun’s heat outside without giving up the view.

Single-story stucco home with a tile roof and wide black-framed sliding windows, desert planting in front and mountains behind

Most of the heat a window lets into a Phoenix house arrives as sunlight through the glass. An energy efficient window stops it there. A low-E coating reflects the heat, a sealed second pane slows what gets past it, and the frame keeps it from conducting around the edge.

Two numbers on the NFRC label describe the result. SHGC is how much solar heat gets through, and U-factor is how fast heat moves through. Lower is better on both, and both are rated on the whole window, not the glass alone.

Four Parts That Do the Work

  • 01

    Low-E coating

A microscopically thin metal layer on the glass that reflects the sun’s heat and still lets the light through.

  • 02

    Two panes and argon

A sealed gap between the panes, filled with argon gas, slows the heat that gets past the coating.

  • 03

    Warm-edge spacer

The strip that holds the panes apart. A warm-edge spacer stops heat slipping around the edge of the glass and cuts condensation.

  • 04

    Frame and install

The frame holds the rating together, and a tight, sealed installation keeps hot air from leaking in around it.

Fog or haze between the panes of your current windows usually means the seal has failed and the insulated glass has stopped doing its job. See our window replacement page.

IWC 8800 Series Ambassador

The aluminum window we install in most homes. Its ThermoTech frames are fully thermally broken, Low-E glass is standard on every Ambassador window, and the frame can be one color outside and another inside.

Finishes: white, Mojave Beige, clear anodized or bronze anodized. Priced a step above commercial aluminum, with IWC’s lifetime limited warranty for single-family homeowners for as long as they own the home.

PRL Glass Systems

Aluminum framing built to commercial standards, the same systems used on storefronts and entrances, with thermal and non-thermal options. We use it where an opening needs heavier framing more than it needs residential finish options.

Finishes: clear or dark bronze anodize, powder coat or Kynar paint.

SRP’s rebate and ENERGY STAR depend on the rated numbers of the exact unit and glass, not on the brand, so we confirm the NFRC U-factor and SHGC for each IWC or PRL window before it goes into your quote.

Why Choose Noble for Energy Efficient Windows?

An efficient window is two things: a product rating and an installation. We put the rating in writing and install to the manufacturer’s published instructions, so the number on the label is the one you live with.

  • Licensed for the Whole Job

Noble Windows & Doors LLC holds AZ ROC #364772, a KB-1 Dual Building Contractor license, plus AZ ROC #364771 for electrical work. SRP’s rebate asks for a contractor licensed in Arizona to install windows, and that is the license on your paperwork.

  • Several Manufacturers, One Quote

We install Andersen, Milgard, Simonton, IWC, PRL and other established makers, so each wall can get the glass package it needs instead of one product line for the whole house.

  • The Numbers in Writing

Your quote lists the U-factor, SHGC and NFRC CPD number of each window we are quoting, so you can check them against ENERGY STAR and SRP yourself.

  • Local Phoenix Showroom

See frames and glass side by side before you order. Our showroom is at 4001 E Broadway Rd, Unit B-11, Phoenix, AZ 85040.

What Affects the Cost of Energy Efficient Windows?

Every window is built to its opening, so there is no list price and we will not invent a range. Here is what moves the number.

A completed Noble window replacement, new arch-top windows on an Arizona stucco elevation

How Many Windows, and How Big

COUNT AND SIZE

Glass area drives most of the cost. A whole-home project usually costs less per opening than a few windows done one at a time, because the setup is shared.

What Affects Your Price

The number of openings and their sizes
Shaped units, such as arch tops and custom geometry
Second-story or hard-to-reach openings
Kitchen with a run of black-framed casement windows over the sink

The Window Specification

FRAME AND GLASS

Frame material, glass package and color. Solar control coatings, laminated glass and dark exterior colors add to the price, and every one of them changes what the window does.

What Affects Your Price

Frame material and interior and exterior color
Low-E type, argon, and any laminated or privacy glass
Operating style: fixed, slider, hung, awning or casement
Installer setting a new window into a framed rough opening

The Installation

RETROFIT OR FULL-FRAME

A retrofit install sets the new window inside the existing frame. A full-frame replacement takes the old frame out to the studs, which adds stucco and interior finish work.

What Affects Your Price

The condition of the existing frames
Stucco, drywall and trim repair on full-frame work
Any change to the size of an opening
$3per square footSRP window rebate

On SRP? Qualifying windows pay you back.

SRP pays $3 per square foot on professionally installed ENERGY STAR rated replacement windows with a U-factor of 0.32 or lower and an SHGC of 0.23 or lower. A standard 3 ft by 5 ft window is 15 square feet, or $45 back.

  • Installed before April 30, 2027, by a contractor licensed in Arizona to install windows
  • The NFRC CPD number for each window, which is on your Noble quote
  • Application submitted within six months of installation
  • Existing homes with more than a year of SRP service; new construction does not qualify

The federal 25C tax credit no longer applies to windows placed in service after December 31, 2025. APS does not currently list a residential window rebate.

A quote far below the others usually leaves something out: a plainer glass package, an unrated frame, or the finish repair, which comes back later. Ask about current promotions and financing when you book. Whatever applies to your project is written into your quote, in full, before anything is signed.

Energy Efficient Window FAQs

What Makes a Window Energy Efficient?
Four parts working together. A low-E coating on the glass reflects the sun’s heat, two sealed panes with argon between them slow the heat that gets past it, a warm-edge spacer stops heat moving around the edge of the glass, and the frame and installation keep air from leaking in around the unit. The result is rated on the whole window and printed on the NFRC label as a U-factor and a Solar Heat Gain Coefficient.
What Do U-Factor and SHGC Mean?
U-factor measures how fast heat moves through the window, frame included. SHGC, the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, measures how much of the sun’s heat gets through. Both run from 0 to 1 and lower is better on both. In a hot climate, a low SHGC is the rating that cuts cooling costs and stops rooms overheating in the afternoon sun.
What Ratings Should a Window Have in Phoenix?
Every Phoenix-area ZIP code sits in ENERGY STAR’s Southern climate zone. Under ENERGY STAR Version 7.0, a window in that zone needs a U-factor of 0.32 or lower and an SHGC of 0.23 or lower. Those are also the two numbers SRP uses for its window rebate. Your Noble quote lists both for each window, along with its NFRC CPD number.
What Is Low-E Glass?
Low-E glass carries a microscopically thin metallic coating that reflects heat while letting visible light through. Coatings are tuned to the climate: in a hot climate they are built to block heat from entering. Milgard fits its SunCoat low-E as standard on its dual-pane windows, and both Andersen and Milgard offer stronger solar control coatings for sun-facing walls.
Is Dual Pane Enough, or Do I Need Triple Pane?
For most Phoenix homes, dual-pane glass with the right low-E coating and argon fill meets the Southern zone criteria. Andersen notes that in the Southern zone more of its product lines meet the requirements with dual-pane glass and coatings. Triple pane lowers the U-factor further and helps with noise, so we quote it where that is the goal rather than as a default.
Which Frame Material Is the Most Energy Efficient?
The whole-window rating matters more than the frame on its own, so compare U-factor and SHGC rather than materials. Vinyl insulates well and is the value choice. Fiberglass and composite are stiffer and more stable in heat, and Andersen rates its Fibrex composite to 150°F even in dark colors. Thermally broken aluminum carries the widest glass on the narrowest frame. All four can be specified to meet the Southern zone numbers.
Which Aluminum Windows Do You Install, IWC or PRL?
Both, for different jobs. For most homes we install IWC’s 8800 Series Ambassador: fully thermally broken aluminum frames, Low-E glass as standard, a choice of one finish outside and another inside, and IWC’s lifetime limited warranty for single-family homeowners for as long as they own the home. It costs a little more than commercial aluminum. PRL Glass Systems builds commercially rated aluminum framing, the kind used on storefronts and entrances, and we use it where an opening calls for that heavier framing. Whether a window qualifies for SRP’s rebate depends on its rated U-factor and SHGC, so we check those numbers for the exact unit and glass before it goes into your quote.
Does SRP Offer a Rebate on Replacement Windows?
Yes. SRP pays $3 per square foot on professionally installed ENERGY STAR rated replacement windows with a U-factor of 0.32 or lower and an SHGC of 0.23 or lower. You need the NFRC Certified Product Directory number for the windows, the installation has to be done before April 30, 2027 by a contractor licensed in Arizona to install windows, and the application has to go in within six months of installation. New construction does not qualify, and SRP can change or end the program at any time.
What If My Home Is on APS?
APS does not currently list a residential rebate for replacement windows. The windows still do the same job on an APS bill, and your quote carries the same U-factor and SHGC figures, so you can compare products the same way.
Is There Still a Federal Tax Credit for Windows?
No. The 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit is not allowed for property placed in service after December 31, 2025, so windows installed in 2026 do not qualify. Some window company pages still advertise it.
How Much Will New Windows Save on My Electric Bill?
It depends on the windows you have now, which way they face, how much shade they get and how the house is cooled, so we will not promise a percentage. The biggest changes are usually on west and south glass that has no low-E coating, or on dual-pane units whose seals have failed.
Will New Windows Stop My Floors and Furniture From Fading?
They will slow it. Andersen publishes that its SmartSun glass blocks 95% of UV rays, and Milgard states that its standard SunCoat glass reduces UV by up to 84 percent. Visible light and heat also contribute to fading, so no glass stops it entirely.
Do I Have to Replace Every Window at Once?
No. Starting with the hottest rooms or the failed units is a legitimate plan. Doing the whole house together lowers the installation cost per opening and keeps frames and colors consistent. We record the exact product and finish so a later phase matches, and SRP’s rebate is paid per square foot of qualifying window, so each phase can be claimed while the program runs.
What Is the Difference Between Retrofit and Full-Frame Replacement?
A retrofit install sets the new window inside the existing frame, with little disturbance to stucco or drywall. A full-frame replacement removes the old frame to the studs, which lets us fix damage behind it and change the opening, and adds stucco and interior finish work. We check every frame at the measure and tell you which each opening needs.
How Long Does Installation Take?
Manufacturing takes a few weeks because the windows are built to your openings. Once they arrive, a smaller project may take a few hours, while a whole-home replacement generally takes one to two days.
What Warranty Comes With the Windows?
Each window carries its manufacturer’s product warranty, with the coverage for the line you choose provided in writing. On top of that, Noble gives its own 3-year workmanship guarantee and comes back to correct any installation issue.
Are You Licensed and Insured?
Yes. Noble Windows & Doors LLC holds AZ ROC #364772, a KB-1 Dual Building Contractor license, plus electrical license AZ ROC #364771, and we carry full insurance. SRP requires a contractor licensed in Arizona to install windows for its rebate, so the license matters on the paperwork too.
